Assessment objectives
- Understand and respond, in writing, to written language
- Communicate in writing for different purposes and audiences, using correct grammar, vocabulary, and register
- Identify key information, detail, and deduce meaning from context across various authentic French texts
- Recognize attitudes, opinions, and emotions in short and long reading passages
- Manipulate language accurately using varied vocabulary, appropriate grammatical structures, correct spelling, and punctuation
Paper Overview & Structure
Section A (Reading – 40 marks)
Task Types: 5 reading comprehension questions based on authentic French texts (e.g., multiple-choice, multiple-matching, note-taking, gap-fill, and short-answer questions).
Assessment Focus: Understanding main ideas, factual details, and opinions. Answers are in French, but minor spelling or grammar errors are not penalized if meaning remains clear.
Section B (Writing – 40 marks)
Task Types: 3 compulsory writing tasks:
- Short grammar/vocabulary task (e.g., verb forms or word filling) – 10 marks.
- Short structured response to bullet points (~60–75 words) – 10 marks.
- Extended piece of writing with a choice of two prompts (~130–150 words) – 20 marks.
Assessment Focus: Accuracy, range of vocabulary, complex grammatical structures, structure, and task completion.
Topics Assessed: Across all five core topic areas (Home and abroad; Education and employment; Personal life and relationships; The world around us; Social activities, fitness and health).
